You’ve managed to further clarify what bothers me so much about this situation, including the possibility of privilege.
I hadn’t considered the possibility of femmephobia, and of course the article on the Guardian is very short, leaving us with few clues. But imagine if that were the case: a gay man in the world of fashion, a fashion leader, wanting to set himself apart as a man, maybe even a “masculine” man, not some prancing fashion queen.
We can only speculate, and we can’t expect him to act differently, but we can certainly call him out on his privilege, and the potential damage he can inflict, given his status.
