Remember the joy you felt as a little kid when your parents took you to the fair, or the amusement park.
Did you get to ride the horse on the merry-go-round? I know I loved it, but what about the parents?
They might love seeing the joy in their child’s face, but they’re thinking to themselves,
“Fuck me! Round and round, when will this be over!”
Clearly I am not a parent :-)
Does it feel like you’re ever running around in circles?
Sometimes I realized I’m running in circles if I feel stuck, or when I’m reminded of my past.
My Day One journal app sends me a notification if I have any entries “On this day” from the last few years.
Sometimes I’ll read something that reminds me of how far I’ve come, or a simple, lovely memory.
Other times I’ll read in disbelief that one of my problems from a year ago, is still a problem. I might feel disgusted with myself. Eventually I realize it’s not entirely true. My problem is not exactly the same, but the root of the problem may still be unresolved.
How do we break the loop of long-standing problems?
Many parts of life are like a continuous loop or a circle. We may circle back home, come back to friends we haven’t seen in a while, or return to something we’re passionate about. Those are the good loops.
If you find yourself bumping up against the same old issue, month after month, or year after year, you might want to ask why.
None of us want life to be like a perpetual merry-go-round. Progress will never be made if we live like that.
I’m assuming it’s safe to say that if you’re a Medium subscriber you want life to be expanding outwards. You want to enlarge, nor narrow the circle of your life. You want to create a greater sphere of influence for your friends, clients, or audience.
If you’re feeling boxed in by your problems, I detailed a powerful process that can help. Use it to figure out the root of your challenge and how you can break free of it: The Bigger Your Problem The More You Need To Try This Solution
The Bigger Your Problem The More You Need To Try This Solution
The outcome of this process is to gain clarity on the reasons for your problems, struggles or challenges.
When I look at one of my biggest challenges from the past year, I need to laugh at myself. My challenge was being gay. I’ve been out for over 30 years, but I’d been blocking using my “gay identity” as part of my work. I didn’t know what to “do with being gay” from a business perspective. I kept looping back to it, but never solving the problem. Thankfully I finally found a solution and wrote about it here, How Does It Feel When You’re Living Your Calling?
How Does It Feel When You’re Living Your Calling?
Over the last two months I’ve had very little sense of time.
